Dynamite- Gunpower was the strongest explosive until Nitroglycerin, but it was unstable. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite after his brother was killed in an explosion. It is a powerful explosive that is stable and useful for demolishing hard materials. Nobel’s brothers expanded economic output into construction and mining, but it was also used in terrorism.
Chuckwagon- The covered wagon was was the ancestor of the chuckwagon and helped settle the midwest. Charles Goodnight invented the chuckwagon when he moved into cattle driving. The chuckwagon is a portable kitchen that stored food and let the cook prepare meals for the trail cowboys. The lure of beef profits increased number of cattle drives, which drove demand for the chuckwagon. Cattle driving was a definitive period of the Wild West and left a lasting impact on history.
Typewriter II- Burt invented the first Typewriter, but only after his patent expired did innovation continue. Christopher Latham Sholes invented the modern typewriter in 1867 after consulting with different inventors. Typewriters allow people to write faster and neater than they can with pen and pencil. Sholes typed up sales letters to send to investors to demonstrate the invention’s benefits. The typewriter led to the QWERTY keyboard and helped bring women into the workforce.
The stock market had been invented in the 1600s by the Dutch, and played an increasingly important role in American Revolution. Edward Callahan invented the ticker tape in 1867 by applying his knowledge of the telegraph. It printed real time stock information on long, narrow tape and provided continuous updates. The invention was improved and became standard by the 1870s. It still exists in digital form on TV programs, and it played a major role in the stock market crash of 1929.
The most interesting invention was dynamite because of how it was used for good and bad.
