TCP/IP Internet Protocol Suite-ARPANET was created by the government to ensure one blast couldn’t disable counterattack capability. Kahn and Cerf developed the TCP/IP Protocol Suite to extend the concept and allow computers to talk to other types of hardware, like satellites. TCP/IP is the set of rules that govern how data will be formatted and transmitted over the internet. Software and computer companies began developing TCP/IP add-ons for their PC operating systems. The protocols made the world wide web possible, which has unlocked vast amounts of knowledge.
Graphical User Interface-Computer interfaces evolved from plugging cables and flipping switches to command line interface. The graphical user interface was invented at Xerox’s PARC in 1973. It presents a friendly, easy-to-understand graphical way for people to interact with computers. Apple copied the Xerox GUI for its Macintosh, and Microsoft copied Apple with Windows. The GUI unlocked computing and allowed it to go mainstream, giving birth to the Internet and devices like touchscreen smartphones.
Steve Jobs- California’s economy was booming after World War 2. Steve Jobs was born in 1955 and adopted, and then confounded the Apple computer in 1976 in his garage. His accomplishments were larger than life and had a disproportionate impact on computing. He was charismatic, understood that his role as an entrepreneur was to represent consumers, and rarely took no for an answer. Because of his efforts, we have GUIs, Pixar’s billion dollar franchises, smartphones, and a digital music industry.
Bill Gates- The micro-computing revolution was launched with the Altair advertisement in Popular Electronics in 1975. Bill Gates got into programming as a teenager, and dropped out of Harvard to develop BASIC for the Altair. He confounded Microsoft in 1976 which developed Windows and the world’s most popular office software. Gates kept Microsoft on its mission and hired his old friend Steve Ballmer, who eventually took over for Bill as CEO. Bill Gates, through Microsoft, helped bring computing and the Internet to the mainstream.
Steve Ballmer’s advertisement was crazy but very convincing because it has all of these options you could choose from but at a low price for such a high quality computer.
