History Lesson 160

Polio is a debilitating disease that could permanently cripple or kill its victims. Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine, and it was announced as safe in 1955. It prevents people from contracting polio, eliminating the fear and effects associated with the disease. Jubilee spread around the world immediately as relief spread throughout nations. Polio has been almost eradicated, and there is hope that it will be fully and forever eradicated soon.

Intermodal Container- Shipping since ancient times has always been labor intensive and prone to theft. Malcolm McLean invented the intermodal Container as a way to ship his truck cargo up the coast in boats. The intermodal Containers increase shipping capacity, simplify shipping difficulty, and reduce labor costs. McLean allowed his patent to be made into an international standard design. The Container transformed shipping and gave rise to the mass international shipping trade.

Integrated Circuit- The transistor was a good start in improving vacuum Tube technology, but it was still too big. Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce invented the integrated Circuit in 1959. Integrated Circuits pack billions of transistors into chips of silicon to provide high computing performance at low power and cost. The government was the first main customer, but prices quickly fell to generate industrial and commercial interest. Integrated Circuits brought about the digital revolution.

Lasers- The discovery of quantum physics in 1900 led Einstein to extend it and predict the possibility of laser light. Charles Townes invented the laser in 1958 at Bell Labs after inventing the master. Laser light is coherent, focused, one wavelength, and can be used for cutting or information transmission. Bell Labs and other companies began building their own lasers for various purposes. Lasers enabled barcode scanners at supermarkets and data and audio and visual media like CDs and DVDs.

I think it would be interesting to see laser technology for the military.
