History lesson 5 what I learned this week

Suspension Bridges-The earliest suspension bridges were ropes slung across chasm with a deck possibly at the same level or below the ropes. James Finley is widely recognized as the first designer and builder of the modern day suspension bridge. The main forces in a suspension bridge of any type are tension in the cables and compression in the pillars is vertically downwards and they are also stabilized by the main cables.

Fire Hydrant Sanitation in ancient rome was a complexed system similar in many ways to modern sanitation systems. During the Middle Ages, the technical knowledge of the Roman system was lost and has subsequently been investigated by modern-era historians and archeologists. The user attaches a hose to a fire hydrant, then a valve on the fire hydrant to provide a powerful flow of water and the user can this hose to a fire engine.

Locomotive-The earliest railways employed horses to draw carts along the railway tracks. in 1784 William Murdoch a scottish inventor, built a small scale prototype of a steam road locomotive. The first full scale working railway steam locomotive, called the ‘Coalbrookdale locomotive’ was also built by Richard Trevithick in the United Kingdom. On 21 Febuary 1804, the world’s first railway journey took place as Trevithick’s unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway from the Pen-y-darren ironworks.
