The safety elevator. Ancient civilizations used simple machines to create elevators, but innovated and stalled out in the 1800s. Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator in 1852 while looking for a better, safer way to lift scraps and wood in a factory, the safety mechanism stops the elevator from plummeting all the way down to the ground if the cable snaps. Otis implemented a dramatic marketing demonstration of his elevator to attract interest and promote sale. Otis elevators are installed in skyscrapers and all over the world.
The syringe. syringes were around in ancient civilizations in some early form for some years but were generally lost. inspired by a bee stinger, Scottish doctor Alexander Woods invented the syringe in 1853 for injecting morphine. The syringe also allows precise control of measurement of how much medicine is injected, and it allows intravenous to no longer be a major surgery.
The Bessemer process. The crimean war began in 1853 as a result of conflicts between England, France, Russia, and Ottoman Empire. Henry Bessemer invented his steel-making process in 1855 after a discussion with Napoleon III about better weapons for the war. The process efficiently converts large batches of pig iron into steel, reducing its price and increasing its production rate.
The egg beater. The US through the mid 1800s was experiencing rapid economic growth through industrialization. Baking had been controlled by guilds for much of history, but the egg beater was simple, but important, technological innovation in 1856. The modern egg beater is a mixer that out mates stirring and mixing ingredients. Other designs proceeded rapidly following Collier’s resulting in the rise of the kitchenaid brand.
